Krissy’s Journey
Krissy is now 19 years old, a college sophomore majoring in Neuroscience, Pre-med and in the Honors program.
At 22-months, she joined her forever family
Krissy’s adoptive parents, Mike and Lirio Dufala, came to her Philippine orphanage to bring her home to California. She traveled internationally between California and South Korea for a year while her mom was finishing off an expatriate corporate assignment in South Korea.
At age 6, a major milestone into child philanthropy
During her first return visit to her orphanage, she saw how happy the children were as they enjoyed cake and ice cream she and her parents brought. She thought how such a simple treat that she takes for granted genuinely brightened their faces. Soon after returning home, she rallied her second-grade class to raise funds and they quickly had enough money to pay for another sweets party for her orphanage. Inspired by the success of her charitable endeavor, Krissy set a new goal of funding sweets parties for 20 more orphanages. After diligently sending sticker-filled fundraiser letters and persistent phone calls to friends and family, funds poured in and she quickly doubled up her goal to 40. The “Sweets for the Holidays” Campaign, as she called it, has turned global. Soon after, pictures of sugar-smeared faces and letters of gratitude from orphans came from orphanages in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. It would inspire Krissy to do more!
At age 9, started life as a missionary
In 2013, with the help of her mom, Krissy founded the Kids Rise Inspire Soar Charitable Foundation (KRIS Foundation). Soon after, KRIS Foundation organized its first Lift Up the Orphans (LUTO) mission trip to the Philippines. Participants from the USA, joined by local participants, traversed the Philippines, visiting a dozen orphanages where they hosted “Sweets for the Holidays” parties, and donated rice, clothing, shoes, books, toothbrushes, toothpaste and other items for basic needs. They also built playgrounds (Happy Play-ces) at three of the orphanages. It was during this first LUTO mission trip in 2013 that Krissy was inspired to build an orphanage. KRIS Foundation has since been organizing the LUTO mission trips to the Philippines once every two years.
At age 13, attended the groundbreaking of the KRIS Campus Children’s Homes
Dream it and it will rise!
In the summer of 2017, during the KRIS third LUTO mission trip, the groundbreaking for the first KRIS Campus facility in the Philippines took place. It would be the culmination of 3+ years of sacrifice, hard work and dedication of the KRIS Team. Joined by an army of dedicated volunteers - individuals, families, businesses, churches and organizations - who contributed their time, talents and pocketbooks to the mission.
KRIS Foundation’s partnership with a local organization, Kids Delightful Grounds Foundation (KDG) in 2016, has been key in the quick and forward progress of the KRIS Campus project.
At age 15, the KRIS Campus started operating
Krissy delivering a celebratory message at the conclusion of the LUTO 2019 mission trip.
During the LUTO 2019 mission trip, two years after the KRIS Campus groundbreaking event, Krissy returned to the KRIS Campus site and saw, in person, the first completed Children’s Home (named Genesis). As she laid eyes on the Genesis children for the first time, she was overwhelmed with emotion and her heart burst with joy. Working with the 2019 LUTO mission team, they completed the KRIS campus playground and prayer garden, in addition to visiting orphanages, holding a free medical clinic and other community outreaches.
